Lightweight and highly breathable fleece that punches above its weight in warmth by trapping loads of air with its voided grid back structure, letting you dump heat like a demon.
Griffon is a lightweight addition to your layering system, great for chilly days at high cadence on the bike or as a super breathable midlayer under a windproof or shell. It’s the perfect weight for not-quite-so-balmy UK summer evenings at the crag or campsite.
The full-length zip makes for easy layering and allows you to control the warmth as your activity level changes. The hood means you can leave your hat at home, knowing if the wind picks up on your hike you can get your ears covered and carry on moving with no fuss. Unobtrusive thumb loops are there if you need them (but are discreet if you don’t), and the zipped chest pocket allows you to stash some cash, keys or a card.
With a smooth outer face and a two-tone look, it also serves well as a travel companion by sneaking in under the ‘you can’t wear a fleece out to dinner’ radar!

How do they do it?!
I'm 5ft 9inch, 30 inch waist, and slim built. The small was an absolute perfect fit. Very good quality main zip, great sleeve length even when not using the thumb loops, and a length so perfect it feels custom made.
There are a couple of notes as the chest pocket is hard to open one handed due to the stretch of the fabric and the actual colour is a bit darker than the stock photo in steel. This suited me and the difference is minimal.
For the price this is a steal. Quality as good as any major brand all whilst supporting a smaller local company. This is the first piece of Alpkit clothing I own (minus a chalk bag from 12 years ago that is still going strong) and I can't wait to try more.
Versatile unisex top!
Firstly, I’m not a man. I have the female UK 10 version of this top in the forest colour, which I wear mainly for running as it’s more like a base layer fit. I loved the Jaffa colourway, unavailable in the women’s, and I wanted a looser fit to use as a mid layer. So I took a chance and ordered the men’s Small. Perfect!
It’s more rescue orange than the description pic but I quite like that. It can fit a couple of thin layers underneath but mainly I wear it with one layer under. I like the long sleeves, and the fact they’re not too fitted means you can push them up easily. Thumb holes are always useful for me with chilly hands. The hood you don’t even notice until you need it. Some things I think are better than the female version: the chest pocket is considerably larger, so will fit my phone and keys in. And it’s longer in the body so better bum coverage. Delighted with it!
useful bit of kit
I needed a warm layer for cycle touring that also wouldn't look out of place in cities on days off the bike. This fleece is perfect, warm, comfy and I got away with not washing it nearly enough on a 4 month cycle tour without it smelling!
I bought this about 9 months ago. I wear it all the time. I like the fact its low bulk but warm - and the hood is great under a shell.
Thin, slinky, and heck of a warmth for the thickness
Perfect under a windproof due to low bulk. Slim stretchy fit, great hood that can replace a beanie, appreciate the thumbholes too, sleeves and body long enough. Also works well as a cosy baselayer/sleepwear.
Wearing or in washing cycle
Bought this for my son, who is 16, slim and tall, perfect fit for his figure shape. If it's not on him, it's in washing. He loves it and it's his first choice for wearing around the house or going out. He says it's amazingly warm, I wouldn't think so, as it's very light, but seems it really is. It's dry in few hours, nice touch, cosy feel.
A steal for the price
Bought two of these (one in each colour) when they were released last May. They wash well and look as new even after a year of use. They have been worn constantly as a general garment over a tee-shirt at home, at work, to the shops, on nights out and on the hill.
They are thin, with a slightly longer fit and hug your body. Having a hood means I don't have to carry a hat and the long sleeves with thumb loops keep your hands warm. In very cold weather they layer under a Filoment or Synoment jacket without adding much bulk at all. Without a doubt they are my most used piece of Alpkit gear. So very, very versatile and an absolute bargain at £39.00. I'm a 43" chest with 34" waist and the Large size is perfect.
A must have in my bag
I ordered this fleece as a light weight layer for ski touring and it did not let me down! For it's weight it is super warm yet breathable. It is comfortable enough to sleep in on cold camps and, due to its fit, can be layered easily! And its breathability is amazing compared to some of my previous midlayers! Just to top it off, it also looks good!
My new favourite top
Possibly one of the most versatile items of clothing I've bought. Light. Warm. Stylish. Well-fitted. Thumb loops are fab. I've worn mine running, cycling, generally out and about and on adventures to the, er, pub. A rear pocket would be amazing but might not be for everyone.
Usual Alpkit Exceptional Quality
Wear this all the time, even round the house, its so lightweight and yet really warm, combined with the Kepler Zip and Morphosis Jacket I can go anywhere and regulate my body temperature. Cycling and Climbing its brilliant.
So pleased with this great quality mid layer (I have paid triple the price for Patagonia) no discernible difference. Love the details= fitted hood and thumb holes. First Alpkit purchase definitely not the last.
This is brilliant. Bought this to use for Ten Tors training, taking kids out onto Dartmoor which is notoriously unpredictable, especially in winter.
It is a very thin, you can see through it if held up to light, but the grid backing keeps heat in very well, whilst the thin material and the full zip allow you to lose heat when needed. Works well in a layered system.
Very comfortable to wear, I found it quite fitting, but I have big shoulders and could loose some weight, I'm 6ft. I bought a large.
Would fully recommend.
The griffon is a lovely fit, quite long in the body and arms. I have worn it with a thin merino base layer and water proof jacket and it's just right on a cold winters day in the peak. Another brilliant product from Alpkit.
Ordered an xl but received a large which worked out better for me great snug fit went up kinder scout in snowy freezing temp under a waterproof and boy is this fleece warm no lie it's the best purchase I've made in years no doubt I'll be getting a few more of these belters
Got turned on to Alpkit's gear by a mate at work. Now rock a Griffon pretty much every day, ideal under a Definition in winter or as a light jacket in summer. Just a perfect piece of kit.
Suitable for most great apes
As a person with a body shape that can only be described as 'gibbon', jumpers of all sorts never fit. Too short in the arms and body, or baggy as an early 90's indie band t-shirt.
Slimmer cut, long body and arms. I can wave at people with flashing midriff now, thanks Alpkit!
Ordered one size larger as other reviewers noted that it was a slim fit (I'm too old and wise for that kind of thing). Having just cycled my morning commute across town in the first misty frost of the season, I can happily say it's a perfect all-round autumn/winter mid-layer. Traps and disperses heat well enough (in both body and hood) to work as my sole warm layer with a windproof on top. If and when things get proper nippy it's still slim enough to allow for another couple of layers on top. I'm really, *really* pleased with this hoody and unless I buy another (a major possibility) I will only be peeling this garment off my back when summer comes (and I'll do it begrudgingly).
An excellent piece of kit/ garment! Light, pack able, good fitting, warm and stretchy . Wow! What a snug bit of kit! Being on the cold weather.
A superb midlayer. Very comfortable and warm for its weight. Fit is close, which works really well. I especially like the vislon zip which feels robust compared to expensive lightweight zips.
I bought one, and, liked it so much I bought another.
First impressions are excellent
I'm reviewing the Griffon after a few days of use and so far, I'm impressed! Out of the bag, I was struck by how thin the gridded fleece material seemed; it is a very lightweight construction, but in use it's warm, athletically fitted making it ideal for layering when the temperatures drop or on its own for autumnal days.
A very versatile bit of kit and one which I can see becoming my go-to layer in all but the coldest of days on the hills.
Also, going to have to purchase a second for my other half, as she's taken a shine to it as well. Ta, Alpkit!
