Lightweight and highly breathable fleece that punches above its weight in warmth by trapping loads of air with its voided grid back structure, letting you dump heat like a demon.
Griffon is a lightweight addition to your layering system, great for chilly days at high cadence on the bike or as a super breathable midlayer under a windproof or shell. It’s the perfect weight for not-quite-so-balmy UK summer evenings at the crag or campsite.
The full-length zip makes for easy layering and allows you to control the warmth as your activity level changes. The hood means you can leave your hat at home, knowing if the wind picks up on your hike you can get your ears covered and carry on moving with no fuss. Unobtrusive thumb loops are there if you need them (but are discreet if you don’t), and the zipped chest pocket allows you to stash some cash, keys or a card.
With a smooth outer face and a two-tone look, it also serves well as a travel companion by sneaking in under the ‘you can’t wear a fleece out to dinner’ radar!
- Moisture wicking and quick drying

Perfect fit - even for tall blokes!
I never leave reviews but was so impressed with the fit of this item I simply had to! I'm 6'2" and lean so I normally struggle to find clothing that has enough length in the arms and body - not so with this item - I ordered L and it fits simply beautifully - the body isn't baggy and seems 'fitted' to my lanky proportions. One very happy chap
Can't fault it
I've just tried to think of something I can criticise, but I've failed.
I practically lived in my mountain equipment eclipse inferno jacket until I got this, Thinner and less warm than the Inferno, so it does depend on the weather which gets the nod. The thin hood makes the difference between sticking an outer layer on and not bothering, so for breezy spring climbs I can be less sweaty and encumbered. I tend to wear the Alpkit to work a lot too, in fact I'm wearing it now Well done Alpkit, your stuff is gradually edging out all my previous kit as it just outperforms them.
Arrived 8.30am, put on at 8.35, may take it off at bedtime! I'm a slim 5'6" and this fits perfectly, long in the body so ideal for layering and on the recumbent trike. Long sleeves and thumb holes most useful. I think I'll be living in my Griffon only to be surgically removed for washing, and/or work.
How do they do it?!
I'm 5ft 9inch, 30 inch waist, and slim built. The small was an absolute perfect fit. Very good quality main zip, great sleeve length even when not using the thumb loops, and a length so perfect it feels custom made.
There are a couple of notes as the chest pocket is hard to open one handed due to the stretch of the fabric and the actual colour is a bit darker than the stock photo in steel. This suited me and the difference is minimal.
For the price this is a steal. Quality as good as any major brand all whilst supporting a smaller local company. This is the first piece of Alpkit clothing I own (minus a chalk bag from 12 years ago that is still going strong) and I can't wait to try more.
Versatile unisex top!
Firstly, I’m not a man. I have the female UK 10 version of this top in the forest colour, which I wear mainly for running as it’s more like a base layer fit. I loved the Jaffa colourway, unavailable in the women’s, and I wanted a looser fit to use as a mid layer. So I took a chance and ordered the men’s Small. Perfect!
It’s more rescue orange than the description pic but I quite like that. It can fit a couple of thin layers underneath but mainly I wear it with one layer under. I like the long sleeves, and the fact they’re not too fitted means you can push them up easily. Thumb holes are always useful for me with chilly hands. The hood you don’t even notice until you need it. Some things I think are better than the female version: the chest pocket is considerably larger, so will fit my phone and keys in. And it’s longer in the body so better bum coverage. Delighted with it!
useful bit of kit
I needed a warm layer for cycle touring that also wouldn't look out of place in cities on days off the bike. This fleece is perfect, warm, comfy and I got away with not washing it nearly enough on a 4 month cycle tour without it smelling!
I bought this about 9 months ago. I wear it all the time. I like the fact its low bulk but warm - and the hood is great under a shell.
Thin, slinky, and heck of a warmth for the thickness
Perfect under a windproof due to low bulk. Slim stretchy fit, great hood that can replace a beanie, appreciate the thumbholes too, sleeves and body long enough. Also works well as a cosy baselayer/sleepwear.
Wearing or in washing cycle
Bought this for my son, who is 16, slim and tall, perfect fit for his figure shape. If it's not on him, it's in washing. He loves it and it's his first choice for wearing around the house or going out. He says it's amazingly warm, I wouldn't think so, as it's very light, but seems it really is. It's dry in few hours, nice touch, cosy feel.
A steal for the price
Bought two of these (one in each colour) when they were released last May. They wash well and look as new even after a year of use. They have been worn constantly as a general garment over a tee-shirt at home, at work, to the shops, on nights out and on the hill.
They are thin, with a slightly longer fit and hug your body. Having a hood means I don't have to carry a hat and the long sleeves with thumb loops keep your hands warm. In very cold weather they layer under a Filoment or Synoment jacket without adding much bulk at all. Without a doubt they are my most used piece of Alpkit gear. So very, very versatile and an absolute bargain at £39.00. I'm a 43" chest with 34" waist and the Large size is perfect.
A must have in my bag
I ordered this fleece as a light weight layer for ski touring and it did not let me down! For it's weight it is super warm yet breathable. It is comfortable enough to sleep in on cold camps and, due to its fit, can be layered easily! And its breathability is amazing compared to some of my previous midlayers! Just to top it off, it also looks good!
My new favourite top
Possibly one of the most versatile items of clothing I've bought. Light. Warm. Stylish. Well-fitted. Thumb loops are fab. I've worn mine running, cycling, generally out and about and on adventures to the, er, pub. A rear pocket would be amazing but might not be for everyone.
Usual Alpkit Exceptional Quality
Wear this all the time, even round the house, its so lightweight and yet really warm, combined with the Kepler Zip and Morphosis Jacket I can go anywhere and regulate my body temperature. Cycling and Climbing its brilliant.
So pleased with this great quality mid layer (I have paid triple the price for Patagonia) no discernible difference. Love the details= fitted hood and thumb holes. First Alpkit purchase definitely not the last.
This is brilliant. Bought this to use for Ten Tors training, taking kids out onto Dartmoor which is notoriously unpredictable, especially in winter.
It is a very thin, you can see through it if held up to light, but the grid backing keeps heat in very well, whilst the thin material and the full zip allow you to lose heat when needed. Works well in a layered system.
Very comfortable to wear, I found it quite fitting, but I have big shoulders and could loose some weight, I'm 6ft. I bought a large.
Would fully recommend.
The griffon is a lovely fit, quite long in the body and arms. I have worn it with a thin merino base layer and water proof jacket and it's just right on a cold winters day in the peak. Another brilliant product from Alpkit.
Ordered an xl but received a large which worked out better for me great snug fit went up kinder scout in snowy freezing temp under a waterproof and boy is this fleece warm no lie it's the best purchase I've made in years no doubt I'll be getting a few more of these belters
Got turned on to Alpkit's gear by a mate at work. Now rock a Griffon pretty much every day, ideal under a Definition in winter or as a light jacket in summer. Just a perfect piece of kit.
Suitable for most great apes
As a person with a body shape that can only be described as 'gibbon', jumpers of all sorts never fit. Too short in the arms and body, or baggy as an early 90's indie band t-shirt.
Slimmer cut, long body and arms. I can wave at people with flashing midriff now, thanks Alpkit!
Ordered one size larger as other reviewers noted that it was a slim fit (I'm too old and wise for that kind of thing). Having just cycled my morning commute across town in the first misty frost of the season, I can happily say it's a perfect all-round autumn/winter mid-layer. Traps and disperses heat well enough (in both body and hood) to work as my sole warm layer with a windproof on top. If and when things get proper nippy it's still slim enough to allow for another couple of layers on top. I'm really, *really* pleased with this hoody and unless I buy another (a major possibility) I will only be peeling this garment off my back when summer comes (and I'll do it begrudgingly).
An excellent piece of kit/ garment! Light, pack able, good fitting, warm and stretchy . Wow! What a snug bit of kit! Being on the cold weather.
A superb midlayer. Very comfortable and warm for its weight. Fit is close, which works really well. I especially like the vislon zip which feels robust compared to expensive lightweight zips.
I bought one, and, liked it so much I bought another.
First impressions are excellent
I'm reviewing the Griffon after a few days of use and so far, I'm impressed! Out of the bag, I was struck by how thin the gridded fleece material seemed; it is a very lightweight construction, but in use it's warm, athletically fitted making it ideal for layering when the temperatures drop or on its own for autumnal days.
A very versatile bit of kit and one which I can see becoming my go-to layer in all but the coldest of days on the hills.
Also, going to have to purchase a second for my other half, as she's taken a shine to it as well. Ta, Alpkit!
Brilliant top, nice and light and surprisingly warmer than it looks. possibly a bit tight under the arms but apart from that a solid piece of kit
All I'd hoped for
Worth waiting for. Stylish - my daughter stole it, so it must be cool...the green is quite unisex
Great light weight fleece
Wonderful light weight fleece, great fit and quality at a good price
Essential Bit of Kit
I`ll whisper it, because Alpkit might hear it !
lots of kit is unnecessary, don`t get me wrong. lovely to have your
pick from top suppliers.
but many a time its superfluous. a lovely woolly jumper or a sports training top will do.
but this light weight warm top with hood, is a basic essential. easy to wear and will come in handy thought out the seasons.
I love The Griffon, it's dead good.
I managed to snag one in time for my trip to Sri Lanka; My regular fleece jackets were all a bit too thick for the tropics and I needed something nice and light to keep the off the evening chill whilst up in the mountains. The Griffon was top notch.
A nice athletic fit (if you've got a round bit in the middle you might find that it sticks out), and a slinky hood that sits perfectly well under a helmet.
It's almost certain to become my most used jacket. Classic Alpkit product. Well done.
A legend in the making
If your work or play in the outdoors and you don't own one of these you must be mad. I have owned mine for about a month now, and I have had it one more than off, it has been on Exmoor, and a 16 day expedition to South Africa. If it didn't say Alpkit on it, you wouldn't know that it hadn't been made by one of those overpriced American companies. This will be a future legend in the way that KSB boots were.
Fabulous for tall chaps with long arms
Lovely and thin but warm. Washes brilliantly. Great value. More colours please x
Nice bit of kit
Lovely fleece. Was on Helm Cragg Wednesday with the wife when a geezer with alpine poles vaulted past me! He was wearing his fleece in green! I wore mine in Bowness that night and whilst supping plenty of beer, I had a thought, I wonder how many of these fleeces have sold and what a small world it is!
Super, smashing, great
My Alpkit obsession continues, with the purchase of the Griffon. Been after a gridded fleece for yonks, so this was just the ticket. Very lightweight, warm and looks great. Love the longer arms and thumb loops. A large is a perfect fit for me at 5' 9". Superb value as always. Looking forward to visiting the Hathersage and Ambleside shops in the next few weeks.....spend a few more quid!
Typically great from Alpkit.
I expect good things from Alpkit and this most recent hoodie is no exception. Great lightweight and athletically designed top, easily fits under an outer layer or for warmer weather by itself. The inner fabric reminds me of 'polartec ' type design and does a great job of insulating considering how thin it is.
I think the Forest colour is much greener than it seems in the pictures, but I don't mind and I've ordered the other colour too!I
Fit as expected, prompt delivery and overall great service.
I've been looking for a lightweight hooded 'active' fleece for some time, and when Alpkit emailed to say one was being launched I was in.
Received it, wore it, got poo'd on by a bird, washed it and wore it again.
Seems to dry quickly and is perfect for chilly starts. Not sure about the design of the thumb holes, have had bad experiences with this design. Other than that, and the odd sizing (I am large in everything but Alpkit), it's bob-on!
Great fit and style
Great fit for a tall slim build, thin enough to fit under my rain jacket so very happy!
Really warm, lightweight, comfortable and a great fit. I’m thinking about buying the other colour.
The only problem is the thumb loops don’t line up with your thumbs. So they’re uncomfortable to use.
Excellent piece of kit
The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is because I've yet to really put it through its paces - however, I'm heading up to Glenmore Lodge in February for some winter mountain time so may amend my review then.
Bought this for general usage - haven't been disappointed so far! Snug but very light and flexible - have used it for a few adventurous and outdoor activities this past month or so since I bought it. Rolls up to basically nothing - and it looks neat too.
As a stocky guy with a very broad chest, I was pleased that this fitted closely yet over the chest area then dropped nicely over the abdomen without any breathing in required! I've found Aplkit's 'slim fit' works well for me as it takes into account the overall sweep of one's body (eg broad shoulders/chest flatter stomach) rather than assuming microscopic dimensions from the off - means rugby-build types can still wear something mildly flattering!
