The sun is slipping below the mountain horizon as you start up the last pitch of the day, or maybe you’re trying to keep your load as light and compact as possible as you race across the dragon’s back.

Filoment is our most packable insulated jacket. It’s designed for active use, so it doesn’t get in the way on the technical bits and is versatile enough to fit into your layering system.

Narrow micro baffles give the Filoment an active, slim fit. It has a dropped, adjustable hem at the back and articulated arms that stop it from riding up when you’re reaching for that next hold or bending over to fit your snowshoes. The insulated zip baffle, chin guard and under-helmet hood keeps you well-defended against the cold.

Filoment also has two zipped hand warmer pockets, internal dump pockets and an external chest pocket for your phone, keys, and other valuables.

The outer fabric is a light yet durable 40gsm nylon with a PFC-free, C0 DWR coating, well equipped to handle the demands of active use as well as being non-toxic to the environment. The responsibly sourced 650FP down fill gives an excellent weight ratio. It’s also hydrophobic, so it retains loft in damp conditions and recovers better too.

Incredibly packable and light, Filoment is a staff favourite. We’ve worn ours on evenings around camp, Alpine starts, and even as part of our sleep systems on ambitiously minimalist mountain marathons.

Environmental Considerations

As part of our continuing effort to remove long-chain flurocarbons from our outer garments, we’re now using C0 Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatments across our down range. Despite the slight impact on performance when compared to C6 DWRs, C0 DWRs are non-toxic and completely PFC-free, causing significantly less environmental damage. We fully support this change. In fact, we quite like the idea of taking time to look after our kit so that it lasts a long time.
We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of all our products – in fact it’s in our DNA: we can’t imagine ever doing anything else. We always review the materials we use, manufacturing methods and our own consumption of resources. We do the research, make informed decisions, and choose the best option available to us.

DownTek-treated down absorbs less water than untreated down. This means it retains its loft better in damp or humid conditions, dries quicker, and recovers better too, keeping you warmer in damp environments than untreated down. DownTek is environmentally safe - Bluesign approved, PFC, PFOA, and PFOS free – and uses only RDS certified down sources. Remember, it’s better not to get your down wet – even hydrophobic down is no substitute for a waterproof shell!

We use only RDS certified down; all our down is audited by a third party to ensure that it comes from birds who are not live-plucked, force-fed, or mistreated.

Product Care Information

You can and should wash this garment, most active outdoor folk do this once or twice a year.

Washing and re-waterproofing flushes out the dirt and oils that have accumulated so that it puffs up nicely and works better in damp conditions

Don’t panic! Down is surprisingly durable and washing is not an onerous task. Read our Down Wash Guide for advice on washing your down jacket, or alternatively let us take care of it for you.

Best down jacket I own

The Filament hoody is definitely my favourite piece of clothing from Alpkit.
It packs light and small, so on the rare occasions that I'm not wearing it I can just have it with me in my rucksack.
I worn this jacket scrambling in Wales, hiking in the Peak District but also on weekends going for walks.
As I said it is very lightweight however brings so much warmth (and I'm someone who feels the cold very easily!) in colder weather. The hood fits very nicely and there are three outer pockets where you can easily fit your phone, cards or money.
I love this jacket and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to keep warm this winter!
