Whether it’s scaling alpine aretes, winter walking lunch stops, long belays in the shade, or just knocking about the tent after sundown, a toasty down jacket is your number one ally against the cold.
We’ve been making down jackets since 2005 – it’s the bread and butter of the delicious Alpkit sandwich. The Fantom is the end result of 14 years of designing, testing and refining. Striking the perfect balance between warmth, weight, and compressibility, it’s the only serious down jacket you’ll ever need.
We’ve used large baffles packed with wonderfully warm 650 fill power duck down from RDS-approved suppliers. There’s a ‘lorra’ loft inside those baffles: enough to keep you snug at subzero and on the highest of Alpine peaks. That might be a lot of fill but we’ve used a superlight and tough 20 denier ripstop nylon fabric and a stitch-through construction, reducing the overall weight and keeping the jacket compressible for stuffing away in rucksacks.
A helmet-compatible hood with wired peak and a two-way front zip accommodate the needs of climbers, and a longer cut stops your bum from getting chilly on long belays. As well as hem pull-cords, the hood can be cinched right down with side and rear adjustors, keeping out draughts and mimicking your head movements. Hidden elastic cuffs are neat under or over gloves.
The zipped handwarmer pockets and collar have a soft tricot lining so you can really hunker down and stay cosy when the cold bites. There’s an internal zipped chest pocket - useful for keeping phone and headtorch batteries warm – and two internal dump pockets too, for defrosting gloves or warming up climbing shoes during grit season.
Downtek™ PFC-free hydrophobic down adds extra moisture resistance: losing less of its insulating loft when wet, drying quicker and is less prone to clumping. The outer shell is also treated with a PFC-free C0 Durable Water Repellent to keep the drizzle at bay.
- Highly insulating for stationary periods or moving in extreme cold: large baffles filled with high-loft 650 FP RDS-approved ethical duck down
- Suitable for climbing and mountaineering: helmet-compatible hood with wired peak and a two-way YKK Vislon front zip for harnesses
- Moisture resistance in damp conditions: Downtek™ PFC-free Hydrophobic down and PFC-free C0 DWR-treated outer shell
- Light and compressible for packing away: lightweight ripstop nylon outer, high quality down and a stitch-through construction
- Full body coverage: a longer cut with hem adjusters and three hood adjusters to keep out draughts and enable the hood to mimic head movements
- Zipped handwarmer pockets, zipped internal chest pocket and internal dump pockets for keeping essentials handy

PFC-free C0 DWR treated
PFC-FREE C0 DWRAs part of our continuing effort to remove long-chain flurocarbons from our outer garments, we’re now using C0 Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatments across our insulation range. Despite the slight impact on performance when compared to C6 DWRs, C0 DWRs are non-toxic and completely PFC-free, causing significantly less environmental damage.
We fully support this change. In fact, we quite like the idea of taking time to look after our kit so that it lasts a long time. We’re committed to reducing the environmental impact of all our products, reviewing the materials we use, manufacturing methods and our own consumption of resources. We do the research, make informed decisions, and choose the best option available to us.
DOWNTEK PFC-FREE WATER REPELLENT DOWNDownTek-treated down absorbs less water than untreated down. This means it retains its loft better in damp or humid conditions, dries quicker, and recovers better too, keeping you warmer in damp environments than untreated down. DownTek is environmentally safe - Bluesign approved, PFC, PFOA, and PFOS free – and uses only RDS certified down sources. Remember, it’s better not to get your down wet – even hydrophobic down is no substitute for a waterproof shell!
RESPONSIBLE DOWN STANDARD
We use only RDS certified down; all our down is audited by a third party to ensure that it comes from birds who are not live-plucked, force-fed, or mistreated.
Product Care Information
You can and should wash this garment, most active outdoor folk do this once or twice a year.
Washing and re-waterproofing flushes out the dirt and oils that have accumulated so that it puffs up nicely and works better in damp conditions
Don’t panic! Down is surprisingly durable and washing is not an onerous task. Read our Down Wash Guide for advice on washing your down jacket, or alternatively let us take care of it for you.
