Creeping up frozen windslab, hand firmly planted on the head of your ice axe; clinging onto brake levers and squinting through the drizzle on frostbitten winter rides...
Glove or mitt? Either would work fine at a... pinch. But why not split the difference? The Vulcan mitt offers a higher level of warmth at a lower level of bulk than a four-fingered glove, without sacrificing any of that vital dexterity.
True mastery of the mitten requires years of dedicated study and nimble-fingered gloves can be on the nippy side in colder conditions. A ‘lobster claw’ design reduces the number of seams and cold spots, doubling up on digit warmth whilst still providing the deftness required to adjust straps, tighten ski-boots and cycle through the gears.
A waterproof membrane and windproof softshell outer guard against immobile, swollen fingers in the cold and wet, and the bemberg lining wicks away any clamminess. Elastic wrist closures and velcro adjusters keep out the drafts and spin-drift.
The pre-curved shape and goatskin leather palms allow you to grip onto ice-axes, poles and your lunch tighter than even the most covetous of crustaceans.
- Split mitten design preserves dexterity while increasing warmth by reducing seams and cold spots and sharing digit warmth
- A PU waterproof membrane and windproof softshell outer ensure your hands stay warm and dry in wet and windy weather
- Precurved fingers and thumbs and a goatskin leather palm for excellent grip
- Elasticated opening with velcro adjustor for a secure closure
- 3 Year Alpine Bond

Really impressive, but a few niggles.
I recently spent a week using the Vulcan gloves for a ski holiday and was generally impressed with them. The gloves were warm, resisted all external moisture and in general were comfortable for the week. I did have a few observations though...
Firstly, the cuff/opening is very slim. Whilst the size large is perfect once on, the cuff opening is tight so getting it over my knuckles and palm is a stretch. It feels like the split in the cuff could be longer making this easier.
This brings me onto my second observation, the loop side of the velco on the cuff has a hard edge which irritates slightly on the edge of the wrist. It feels like the seam of the velcro could've been hidden to avoid this, rather that stitch the veclro patch on with all external seams. I ended putting a little stript of k-tape over this to stop it rubbing.
Finally, the lining... warm, comfy, but as soon as there's a tiny bit of moisture (in this case the tiniest sweat) it sticks like glue!! After a particularly long run, I had to carefully work the gloves off my hand being careful to grip the fingers tightly so I didn't turn the gloves inside out!
On the whole, they're still great.... Once on, they're comfy and perform flawlessly. Getting them on and getting them off is a little frustrating, meaning they take just a bit longer at the start and end of use.
