Winter Camping Tents true winter shelters for cosy nights

Winter camping tents are designed to withstand high winds and heavy snowfall in cold winter conditions. Generally they need to have more liveability than 3 season tents as winter nights are long and dark. Spending a couple of days holed up if a storm hits can become un-fun very quickly, that said it's made a whole lot easier with a book from our bookshelf and don't forget Pass The Pigs.

When choosing a pitch to camp bear in mind night temperatures in valley floors may be colder than the hillside as cold air sinks. Look for shelter from cold winds that whip away the warmth. Keep the tent dry, so keep good ventilation, clear away snow and keep all wet stuff in the porch to minimise condensation.

Mens Winter Clothing Checklist key pieces for savvy layering

In winter, your comfort depends on savvy layering. The key is to stay dry as even the slightest moisture will chill the moment. Start off cool and layer up so you don't overheat and sweat profusely. But don't wait until you're cold as its much easier to stay warm than to get warm. The moment it starts to rain or snow then put on a shell to keep dry. Take a wind shirt and wear breathable layers under your outer to keep moist air free flowing. If you're still chilly at night when your in your bag then hat and socks can make all the difference.

Winter Camping Essentials

Fuelling the fire ... the one element to look after is you. Good food and drink helps keep you warm. If you are cold, miserable and hungry you will only become colder, more miserable, more hungry. You feel colder when you are hungry. Eating just before you go to bed can help a warm nights sleep. Remember that butane doesn't vaporise below 0C and propane doesn't vaporise below -40C so cooking at colder temperatures will take longer and gas might not work at all in very cold climates. Put snow in your flask overnight so there is water ready to boil in the morning. Use dry bags to keep dry things dry and stop wet things creating condensation.
