We like to keep our hands well-protected when we’re out on an adventure, so here’s our guide to which glove will meet your hand-protecting needs…

Winter and Mountain Gloves

Pola

What? Soft and dexterous waterproof insulated gloves with synthetic insulation and a PU palm

For… hiking and hillwalking in UK conditions, a lightweight and simple construction makes Pola very soft and malleable, ideal for when full mountain gloves would be complete overkill!

When and where? UK conditions, think damp days in Autumn, Spring and Winter where you want to get out on the hill nonetheless.

Haline

What? Softshell glove with waterproof insert

For… waterproof protection without the bulk of a fully insulated glove; activities where you want to retain your dexterity: alpine climbing and skiing, mixed climbing, rainy, cold days closer to home.

When and where? Year-round use, whether you’re talking summer in the Alps or fast and light winter walk-ins up in Scotland.

Frazil

What? Dexterous and grippy windproof and weatherproof glove with insulation on the back of the hand where you need it

For… technical mixed climbing, ski touring. anything where dexterity and grip are priorities. Activities where it probably won’t be pouring it down or you’re likely to have overmitts on to keep out the snow.

When and where? Scottish winter, cold, dry and windy environments where you’re unlikely to be elbow deep in snow.

  • Uninsulated palm, articulated fingers and thumb panelling for dexterity.

  • Pile lining gives some insulation on the palm side and feels amazing next to your skin.

Gabbro

What? Waterproof insulated glove with a softshell outer; warm without being bulky, protective without being restrictive, and really hardwearing!

For… technical mountaineering and skiing – handling wet rope, using your axes on less technical terrain, traversing Tower ridge, holding your ski poles…

When and where? The mountains in cold, damp weather! Scotland, the Alps… You’re expecting conditions to be damp and you want to be able to use your hands when you’ve got your gloves on.

When and where? Harsh, wet, cold conditions in the winter months

When and where? Harsh, cold, wet and snowy conditions in

Liner/Fleece gloves

What? Midweight fleece liner glove

For… wearing on its own when you’re moving fast and light or doing high-output activities, or lining a shell glove in colder temperatures.

When and where? Year-round in the UK or abroad and there’s a chill in the air. We’ve worn them a lot on the UK fells.

What? Midweight fleece glove with windproof, water resistant pullover mitt

For… running when it’s blowing a hoolie out, when it’s raining cats and dogs, or when it’s just plain cold

When and where? Year-round in the UK or abroad, the samples have spent a lot of rainy and windy days with Buyer Dave on the Peak District fells and further afield.

For… a bit of comfort and protection when you’re riding all day at the trail centre, the kind of rough and technical terrain that takes its toll on your hands.

When and where? Year-round use on big natural trails on the mountains or for the bigger trail centres. To name a couple, we’ve taken them up Helvellyn and round Bike Park Wales…
