Tonkas are a regular cut, tough but lightweight convertible trousers for walking, hiking, travel and adventure.
Made from technical 136gsm and SPF50+ fabric they are lightweight, fast wicking and quick drying. Ideal for backpacking and Alpine trekking. They are so lightweight and pack so small they are also ideal to take cycle touring for times off the bike around the campsite in morning and evenings.
Converting these trousers to shorts is a cinch, just zip off above the knee and feel the breeze. Ronnie has even subtly colour coded the zips so you know which leg to put back on which side. Nice eh!
You can wear Tonka with confidence; Tricot lined waist with belt loops, YKK zipped fly with a button waist closure and double stitched critical seams for durability. Fast wicking and quick drying with UPF 50+ sun protection make them a cool choice for hot conditions.
There are plenty of pockets to stash your stuff or sink your hands into while posing in your favourite catalogue shot pose. Open hand pockets on the front with partial mesh lining, open rear pockets and a YKK ripped thigh cargo pocket. There is also a zipped security pocket in one of the front pockets, but don’t tell everyone.
In ‘long’ mode Tonka has a 32” inseam, however we have left a deep plain hem so you can easily make length alterations. In ‘short’ mode Tonka has a 10” inseam.

Nice bit of kit
Bought these for TrekFest - an upcoming 50k walk in the Peaks in Sept 18, so wanted something lightweight and flexible for heat and cold/rain. Not sure if the design's updated since the other review, but the belt loops were fine for me, and the zip off legs good too - one zip is light grey, and the other dark, so you can see which is which, and also one is clockwise, and the other anti-clockwise around the leg, if you see what I mean.
Coped with a recent 100k training cycle, and another 20k walk, getting soaked, and drying out pretty quickly. Front pockets are mesh lined. Thigh pocket will take an OS map widthways, but it will stick out about 10 cm lengthways, but fine for easy access. Quite long in the leg, but I just turned them up.
Does the job for me, at a price that's right.
Fine, but not brilliant
I've used these trousers for a little while and they are fine – if from another manufacturer. But I'm used to Alpkit stuff being a little bit special, and these aren't. The cut is ok, but the main problem I find is that the belt loops at the back are too spaced out, meaning a belt sits above the waistband. Also, the zips aren't colour-coded as far as I can see, which means the same trial and error you get from any other brand of zip offs. Fine, but not great.
