The first part of the book focuses on Faulkner's wayfaring across Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India to the foot of Everest in Tibet. The obstacles they have to overcome to succeed make this extraordinary journey even more shocking; from escaping the Syrian army, to confronting Iranian mullahs, to setting their support car alight to thaw it. 

The second part of the book takes the reader to the summit of Everest. More ordeals undoubtedly ensue, such as deciding whether or not to share their limited oxygen to save another climber.
