Lightweight metal snow shovel with collapsible handle
Snow shovels are often underrated as key gear on a winter trip. They are invaluable, nay a necessity on any winter trip.
The most crucial use for a snow shovel is, of course, emergency avalanche rescue. Every member of the group should carry a snow shovel- it is of no use if the person carrying the only snow shovel needs rescuing! A snow shovel is incredibly useful for testing snowpack conditions; Snow Sheer, Snowpack Pit’s and the Rutschblock tests are all much easier to conduct with a snow shovel.
The Faders snow shovel has a collapsible handle meaning that it can be tucked away nicely in your rucksack or attached to the front.
The snow shovel can is indispensable when creating camping platforms or emergency shelters. The T-grip handle gives a sturdy grip when digging the snow. The plastic handle prevents your hands from getting so cold. It can also be useful to wrap some form of tape (such as hockey tape) around the metal shaft to reduce the conductivity of the metal drawing heat away from you whilst digging.
The metal composition gives the shovel fantastic bite for cutting through hard packed snow and much greater rigidity and durability than plastic shovels that can become brittle in the cold. The ridging on the scoop of the shovel grips each load to assist quicker shoveling.
The shovel could potentially be used with an ice axe (or walking pole) in the event of the handle becoming lost. The hole for the the handle is a tapered 3.0 x 3.5 cm and won’t be compatible with all ice axes.
