Just you and miles of trail unravelling into the distance. What else could you possibly need? Hmm, maybe drinkable water…
When packing kit for a trail or ultralight adventure, weight and versatility are key. After all, when you step out of your front door, who knows where you'll be swept off to?
The Sawyer Mini Filtration System is prepared for the unforeseen. With a range of filtering and drinking options; it can be used inline with a hydration bag, directly screwed onto most standard water bottles, or attached to the Sawyer Squeeze Pouch. A push/pull cap gives your Mini Filter on/off functionality so that you can squeeze water directly into your mouth as and when you need it.
Who knew a lifeline could be so light? Weighing just 2 ounces, with a collapsible pouch that rolls up tight for easy packing, you can carry it everywhere for just in case, and you'll probably forget that it's tagging along until you need to use it. It's lightness comes at no detriment to its performance. Filtering to 0.1 micron and killing 99.99999% of bacteria, and 99.9999% of protozoa, the Mini can filter up to 100 000 gallons of water - technically you could use it to fill a 50 foot swimming pool, but you're probably better off using it for an adventure.
Wonderfully self-sufficient and long-lasting, the Mini is backflushable, which means that it won't lose its high flow, and you won't need to buy one single cartridge. Not ever.
The Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System comes with a filter, 16 oz squeeze pouch, drinking straw, and cleaning plunger.

For such minimal weight, it made sense to me which is why I bought one. Normally I drink water untreated from mountain streams, and 40 years of doing so has only ever resulted in my being comfortably hydrated!
However, suitable water sources are not always available, which necessitates carrying water (heavy at over 1kg per litre), so if treatable water will be available (eg runoff, puddles, tarns) then carrying this filter means a serious amount of net saved weight.
There are filters out there which are faster and/or easier to use, but the Sawyer Mini appears to work perfectly well (although the mere fact that you don't get ill isn't exactly proof!) and I find it incredibly useful just to know I've got the facility should I need it, and for reducing my average pack weight as described.
The prevalence of these little filters in so many hikers' kit suggests that I'm not alone!
This is my water filter that I use on all wild camps. It is lightweight, small and the slightly murky water does come out clear. Although on my last camp it still had a greenish tint to it but it tasted fine. Would still recommend boiling water as well as using the filter, just to be on the safe side. One thing that is really good about it is that it can go on the end of most 500ml plastic bottles which you can then use for collecting the water before filtering the water into another bottle.
