Thick and warm and it does have inside pockets!
I almost didn't get this as it doesn't say anywhere that it has inside pockets. Glad I did as it's lovely and warm and comfortable and with the pockets for phone and wallet it's perfect.
I bought this a couple of months ago and I've worn it regularly. Excellent quality and fit and very comfortable. Very pleased.
My only minor gripe is that there are no zips on the pockets.
Really Warm, Comfortable Fleece
Purchased this garment on a whim with £50 Christmas money at the Keswick store. I was in need of new fleecy jacket with a hood (the x=n+1 formula seems to apply to jackets for me). I'm 5'11"/38" chest and a small fits me nice and snug. The hood is nice and big too, so I can wear a buff or a hat and still pull the hood up over.
Warmth-wise it's easily the warmest fleece I have ever owned - and I have fleeces costing twice as much from Rab & Montane. The close-knit outer and soft inner face cut out the breeze, although it isn't completely windproof (Alpkit don't market is as a windproof).
Another plus for for me is that when worn with a merino base layer I don't get a build-up of static.
Aspects which could be improved? Very little. The baffle at the top of the zip feels a bit plasticky. There's no zip pocket. I'm being picky though.
A really warm, snug fitting, great value fleece jacket with a good sized hood. Keeps most of the wind out and can be worn with merino. I wear it most days. A Vizsler jacket in this material would be perfect Alpkit...
Good piece of kit
Its on the cold side here in Mallorca, so thought I would give this fleece ago. Honestly its perfect of hikes in the cooler weather, kept me warm but not over heated and its light enough with a nice fit to give me plenty of movement. Also not bulky so I can throw a down jacket on if it gets seriously freezing.
Warm and toasty
This is my go to Fleece for generally everything, It is nice and warm with a good amount of wind resistance built in too (better than any other fleece i have owned) I sometimes wear it when out walking around our local Peak district without getting too hot (It is bulky though, so when i do have to carry it, i shove it on the external Bungies on my Gourdon 20) , it is also good to throw on when going to the Shops or Pub as it has a smarter appearance than most fleeces. I have had this Jacket for about 18 months now and there is very little bobbling (due to the type of material its made from) from abrasions. The Fit is spot on too , i am 5Ft 10" and a medium fits great. It is so good, i bought my wife one.
I've probably had this jacket for close to two years now and it's become one of my favourite items of clothing. It's really comfy and the XL fits my 6 foot 3 and thick build very well. I especially appreciate the length, as I often find clothing gets wider but not longer as the size increases, and its actually one of the only jackets I own with sleeves that make it down to my wrists!
It kept me warm at Snowdon's summit in the first week of march with 2 thin base layers, but doesn't stifle you when in warmer conditions.
There are only two changes I would ask for, based on my use as a mountain biker. Firstly, some sort of velcro/popper closure on the wrists. When riding, the loose fit allows cold wind up the sleeves which undoes a lot of the insulating effect. Secondly, zippered pockets, maybe with a chest pocket so a phone or keys don't risk flying out on jumps or rough sections.
That being said, I'd happily buy this again should mine be lost or damaged. Sorry for the essay, but I really do love this hoodie!
I initially purchased the Mamalute Blue XXL thinking as a 6'2 47 chest it would be the perfect fit.But on trying it out found there was plenty of room to spare. So ordered the XL and it is a perfect and feels warm and snug without being to restrictive.Enough room for a decent base layer underneath. The returns process is so easy and there is no issue.I look forward to taking the Mamalute out for a proper workout in the next few days.
Thank You and Keep up the Good Work AlpKit
Awesome heavy weight fleece
Got this earlier in the year and have worn it loads. Love the look of it and i use it most days when its a bit chilly. I would say it is more for every day casual wear but it does have some great features taken from outdoors equiptment such as the zip which comes right up to under your chin and the hood shape which both stop the wind from coming in through the hood ! So can pretty much be used in every occasion. Good fit and comfortable!
Even keeps the rain out
I really enjoy using this fleece. It works in all conditions. It's great for putting on after a swim and for hiking in the rain. The fleece is nice and warm, the hood is a good shape, and the neck isn't tight when everything is zipped up. I will be buying more.
High hopes of this thing, looks great so far!
Bought this online after trying on the Patagonia 'Better Sweater' hoodie in the shops... its fantastic!! been doing some work inside in it and didn't get too hot which is usually a problem for me with a hoodie this warm.
Only slight issue is I had to order a medium to get a good fit on the shoulders and it resulted in the hoodie being a bit short down to the waist - a common problem for me though being 6'6 so most others should have no issues. having said that the arms still feel like a good length and it works well in conjunction with the current base layer, I can definitely see this being a great crag combo for the future.
Bought this as a little Christmas present to myself and I'm well impressed with the way it has performed so far, the cut is superb (I'm 6ft 4' and slim) and fits well. I also bought the katabatic and they layer up amazingly well with no overlapping for when it gets really cold!
I have never bought a garment with this quality. A friend who is very knowledgeable about Hiking gear and their fabrics etc advised me to buy it. He's always doing that ... but this time I had the money and this thing looked really good. I am blown away with the quality and the warmth, it#s a superb fit. Well packaged. This is a great company, i hope they keep getting more recognised in the Hiking fraternity.
I wear this when i get up in the morning in my cold flat. I wore it to my recent trip to Liverpool and people are commenting on it.
Thanks also for the packaging etc.
Better than Patagonia
Purchased on a whim, because I like the grey. I already own a number of Patagonia 'better sweater' garms, that I paid £££ for. This one is a better fit, nicer fabric, and hasn't been off me since I received it. Fortunate it's got a touch colder recently. I've owned and still own loads of fleece garms, and this is top of the list. Perfect.
Great fleece, not perfect
This fleece just arrived and it was a good price in the sale. Sadly the sizing seems off. I am a 44" chest but the large is enormous on me with long sleeves too.. I could possibly get away with it but there's no hem drawcord, which is surprising given that this is a very warm jacket and I immediately notice any draughts coming up under the hem when I'm outside in cold or windy weather.
It's a big shame because it feels fantastic to wear, but I'll have to return it and wait for a medium to come into stock.
So only 4* from me because of the lack of hem drawcord, but otherwise it's great in the right size.
Got this in my usual Alpkit size "L". One of the (many) reasons I like Alpkit gear is that the sleeves accommodate my ape-like arm length. On this jacket they are bordering on being too long, even for me, and they can't easily be folded back.
The hood is also interesting-it's huge! I can comfortably wear a climbing helmet under it, but there is no way of regulating the volume or cinching it down a bit, so on breezy days like today it keeps blowing off my head.
The material is quite thick, so the same breezes that removed the hood are nicely blocked. Definite plus point there!
A minor point is that the pockets are zipless- worth looking at for future versions? The jacket is still comfortable, and the usual AK quality and value, and I will continue to happily use. Keep up the good work!
