Climbing in UV at The Climbing Hangar end of season party.
We were delighted to support the final round of this years The Climbing Hangar Winter Bouldering League, I mean who wouldn't be swayed by the UV party!? We set Ben, Ant and Anna the challenge of some last minute bouldermat production for their Maters prizes in the form of a Project, Mujo and Phud. Plus we threw in some rather nifty and matching Waffa launch pads as spot prizes. Here's a summarry of the evening plus a couple of videos to gain a feel for the whole proceedings.
The Climbing Hangar celebrated the end of its Winter Bouldering League on Friday 7th March in epic and psychedelic style with nearly 200 competitors and clubbers climbing and dancing it out to the small hours.
The six round event comprising of three categories, Masters (mixed gender), Open and U16 concluded with a ultra violet flooded climbing arena, glowing florescent pink climbing holds, UV artwork and climbs involving getting into a kayak from a buoy, swinging between tyres jumping downwards to catch jugs. Check out the Alpkit sponsored Kayak problem below.
Centre Manager Dan Knight described the event as more than a competition, 'It's about bringing people together to enjoy the sport in a unique and exciting way, The Hangar has a vibrant and engaged community of climbers of all ages and abilities, the league and the UV night saw hundreds of competitors getting well stuck in but also getting fully behind one another, people, particularly those new to the sport of bouldering, were astonished at how supportive complete strangers were. The best part of the whole thing though, is making it silly. The Alpkit kayak problem was a complete winner with people literally throwing themselves in and out of the swinging, spinning boat. problems like this help remind people that climbing isn't all about being strong and serious, but being a bit daft too.'
6 DJ's playing on a massive soundsystem befitting of a big club, provided the soundtrack to the night. 'Music is a massive part of our events' says Ged Mac, Managing Director, 'We have a core group of very talented DJ's who love to play to our crowd and the crowd respond very well to having a bit of a show put on for them. It's makes it so much more unique.' You can catch the full Hangar UV mix from Jordan Colquhoun
While the scores were counted, the crowd were kept entertained with the Alpkit super slab open final - a £50 cash prize and boulder pad problem. Set by teettery slab lover Ged, the problem was open for all to try and involved balancing up thin strips of grip tape and marginal footholds to a committing finish. 13 year old Severin Domela clinched the prize under pressure competing against many seasoned climbers and in front of a huge crowd.
