Watching the big guns at CWIFF 2014

Cwiff14 1

It was a strong European contingent at this year's Climbing Works International Festival, with visiting climbers showing a very high calibre as they made their presence known. In the men's competition Alpkit's Tom Newman qualified for the semi-finals, finishing 16th overall in what was a very strong field. In the final it was France's Thomas Caleyron taking top spot, flashing all 4 problems. Following up behind were Germany's Alexander Megos and Gabriele Moroni from Italy. Stewart Watson finished well in 5th position, just one of two GB competitors in the top 10.

Over in the women's final it was another strong field made up of many visiting europeans, but it was Shauna Coxsey who continued her impressive form and came out on top ahead of Slovenian Mina Markovic.

Our own Ben Meakin, nursing a damaged ankle, went along to watch the finals and was blown away by the power and control of the top climbers. "It was truly amazing to watch the strength of these guys. Watching the competition scene here in the UK you think everyone's strong, but when you see the ease at which these top European climbers pull through on some of the problems it really takes you aback. Impressed and inspired, it just sets competition bouldering at another level."
