Chasing The Sublime

Release of this atmospheric and inspiring look at long distance swimming in cold water
Alpkit are delighted to present 'Chasing the Sublime', a mesmeric glimpse at the physicality of long distance cold water swimming by award winning director Amanda Bluglass. We have been proud to be supporting the Outdoor Swimming Society for a few years now and they've been instrumental in helping test and develop our wetsuits.
So when Amanda decided to make this film with the originators of OSS and good friends of Alpkit, 'swim twins' Kate Rew and Kari Furre, we jumped at the chance to help support it. It's been a real delight working with them and watching the journey to completion. So join them now as they set out to chase the sublime.
Why do we put ourselves into the path of discomfort and risk? What drives us to get too cold and too tired, to battle with fear, in the name of adventure?
Loch Hourn on the Knoydart peninsula in the Western Isles of Scotland is regarded as one of the last wildernesses of Europe. Access to sea lochs is difficult. Salt water mingles with fresh water as it runs off the mountains, icy even in high summer. This mesmeric film immerses us in the physicality of cold water swimming, asking why we put ourselves in the path of discomfort and risk; why does the search for adventure take us to ever more remote and inhospitable places?
Chasing the Sublime has been nominated for awards in the following film festivals so far through 2019.
Vancouver International Women in Film Festival 8th March 2019
Four Seasons Film Festival 21st March 2019
Sheffield Adventure Film Festival 23rd March 2019
BMC Women in Adventure Film Competition #WAF19

Definitely worth 6 minutes of your time
Beautifully shot. it really captures the positives of cold water and open water swimming.
I particularly like the acknowledgement of the fears and hesitations that almost any cold water swimmer feels before getting in.
Chasing the sublime
Amazing short film, it truely encapsulates what it’s like to swim in open water.
Wish it was me
The film and the swimmers achievements are wonderful -truly makes you feel you are there with them and without the agony you remember when putting your feet in such water brings!
it was great to dwell on the physicality of this outdoor swim - the element of fear, of cold and the difficulty of launching off . The dark dark blue, the rain and the slow were mesmerising.
I loved the way they talked about the fear. Honest.
