An evening at Run YHA

An evening of fell running in the dark, in the rain from Castleton YHA.

On a very wet Friday evening in the Peak District we were delighted to be supporting Run YHA at Castleton.  We had come on board to sponsor their Friday evening Night Run, aimed at introducing and encouraging folk to leave behind the comfort of daylight running and embrace the realms of darkness, with each entrant received a Gamma headtorch as part of their entrance fee. We were also there to show off a few of our other lighting options, including the new Arc headtorch with quick change battery pack. Oh and to enjoy a talk from the legendary Billy Bland.
To be honest it could have been slightly better weather, particularly for those on their first excursion into night fell running. However it didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of over 50 super keen runners all donning head torches and heading onto the dark trails, with just the light of their torches illuminating their path.

Head fell running guide for the weekend Dave Taylor sums up the vibe on the evening…
"There was a buzz of anticipation as the runners were split into 3 groups for the night run.  We wanted to cater for all ability levels so there was a choice of Brisk, Steady and Easy for the trip up to Hollins Cross above Castleton.  The torrential rain made for interesting running conditions as we had to negotiate knee deep water, mud and a plague of frogs!  It was a great sight from the top of the hill to see a trail of almost 60 torches weaving their way up.  A tricky downhill section added a bit of variety and gave the runners a real taste of what can be achieved with a head torch and a sense of adventure!   Many thanks to Alpkit for their generosity!"

Watching a talk by headtorch light!

Run YHA Castleton was a weekend long event celebrating the delights of fell running, accessible to all levels of experience. Consisting of talks and films from imminent players in the sport and a number of organised runs and races throughout the weekend.

Brilliant to meet up with Billy Bland, we even got him sporting a Gamma headtorch.

With our range of head torches developing throughout the year we are sure to be training ourselves ready for more night running! You can also find some fell run guides in our Bookshelf to set you on your way, and for more info on Dave Taylor guiding check out his website
