Underneath the hood
By Nick | 07, Dec, 2006
First there was the Filo jacket and people were happy. Then we cut the arms off and the Filet was born, more choice and people were even happier. But all this was a prelude to the main event, so put your arms in the air and rejoyce as we sew on a hood and introduce the Fantom.
Actually that's not doing the Fantom justice, it's not simply a Filo with a hood. We have taken the lessons we have learned from the Filo and redesigned the Fantom from the ground up. The result is a solid All Mountain Down Jacket as comfortable on a slushy belay ledge as a snow covered balcony overlooking Courmayeur. It is our most technical garment and offers superb performance for a stunning price.
Let's start with the obvious difference to the Filo.. the hood. It is fixed to the jacket, wired and big enough to wear over a helmet. Since we don't always walk around with a helmet on there is also a volume adjuster.
Now let's take look underneath the hood. The fill is 320 grams of 700+(EU) fill power white Chinese goose down, it is the heart and soul of the down jacket and offers a good trade off between price and performance. Total weight of the jacket is round about 625 grams, true to Alpkit style we will publish the exact weights when the production shipment comes in.
The outer fabric has been rated water impermeable to 10,000mm (JIS L 1092), but don't purchase this jacket thinking it is waterproof. Like the Filo we have used a stitch through construction and although we have used a low wicking thread which will help to limit the amount of water seeping through the stitching it is not waterproof.
The microfleece lined handwarmer pockets are high up across the chest which means they are accessible when you are wearing a harness or a rucksack. In addition there is a large internal drying pocket.
The Fantom will be available in mens small, medium, large and extra-large sizes. Choice of colour is easier.. it is Retro Red!
The Fantom was due to be on sale for mid December, but due to a few technical issues we have decided not to rush just to get a few sales before Christmas. Release date will now be after Christmas, it gives us a chance to dot all the Ts and cross the Is. Anyway it's not really cold yet is it? still plenty of time to get some use out of your Filet. In exchange for the Fantom we will ask you to part with 100 of your finest British Pounds.
In the January edition of Trail (out now in all good newsagents) Graham Thompson tests the Fantom against other down jackets. Did we make it as a finalist? You will have to buy it to see!
