A fresh approach to training

By Paul Errington | 20, Apr, 2009

Half way there and only at the start...

This is possibly the only time of the year that the mountain bike season takes a break… the winter race series are done… the few early year races have happened and we are a month away before the big endurance races start to happen…

A good time to get prepared… as well as normal structured training i also wanted to try the approach of ‘to race for 24 hours.. you must train for 24 hours’ ... or another way i was viewing it was that if i make my training insane then racing will be like a rest day..

Perfect opportunity came with an invite to join a small group of friends in a days ride on the traditional Whitehaven to Tynemouth C2C route.. not one for thrill seeking technical riders but plenty of climbing and good scenery to make it worthwhile.. decided to get some extra miles in by riding to start from Manchester overnight.. so i got a good 140 miles done before the ride started… day was great.. weather was best of the year so far with amazing sunshine all day… climbs weren’t as bad as i remembered even with bag on the back of the bike..

Day totals saw 280 miles of riding, 27 hours from setting off to climbing off with a few stops for food and views on the way… almost too good a ride to call it training.. only a month to the first 24 of the year and i can’t wait:)
