Gravitas Lightweight Activity Waterproof

After two years in development we are getting close to final prototypes of an ultra-lightweight waterproof shell to be a go-to jacket for running, riding, climbing, hiking or kayaking.

Here at Alpkit we’re multisport people. We like to paddle, climb, bike and hike – sometimes all in one weekend! Packing for a weekend away when you don’t quite know what you’ll be doing brings many logistical challenges, and a few clothing conundrums too.

So we’ve set out to make clothing that helps make those ‘what shall I wear’ moments a little easier. We’re developing a range of waterproofs with the multi-activity user in mind. We want to make clothing you can rely on to perform well whatever activity you’re doing, to keep you comfortable and let you focus on having fun!

You know those days when you can’t decide whether you’re going to need a waterproof or not? Deciding whether to risk it and travel a little lighter, or put the jacket in your pack anyway 'just in case’, is one of those decisions we’ve all made time and time again. Most of us have risked going without and got drenched on at least one occasion. Sometimes it’s not a problem, you can just finish up a little earlier than planned – skip the lunch stop and keep moving to keep warm. At other times though playing the fast and light card can go badly wrong – take a twisted ankle, which slows you down (or worse, incapacitates you) meaning you can’t get down off the mountain as fast as you’d planned, and the weather closes in earlier than the forecast. As always, it’s a judgement call. But having that extra protection from the jacket you stashed at the bottom of your rucksack, buys you a bit of a safety margin. It can extend your comfort range, and it might even save your life.

We’re working on a jacket that will make taking it ‘just in case’ a no brainer, using uber-light fabric and cunning design to give you a truly functional but barely noticeable waterproof shell. It’s about as exciting as waterproofs get, but then we are a bit geeky like that here…
