A call for help

When Andy Kirkpatrick asked for help we just couldn't say no

This week I was quietly minding my own business and getting on with the daily grind when a short but concise email popped into my inbox.

“I'm on the scrounge, as off to Zion with Alex Jones (BBC One Show) for Sports Relief, do you think your sewing guys could make some Alpkit big wall stash bags?.. Can you help?”

Well apart from not knowing what a big wall stash bag was of course we can, I’m a sucker for large charity challenges and there is nothing we like better than messing around designing new things in the workshop. After a couple of emails to and fro with Andy Kirkpatrick I had the bones of the brief for the wall bags and some rough sketches drawn in my note book. Andy wanted a super tough stuff bags he could and the team could fill with sleeping bags, clothing, food etc. to simply organise the kit within the massive haul bags. They must be easy to grab with mitts on, and be strong enough should they need to be persuaded out of the haul bag and easily clipped to to the wall or ledge.

We had been messing around with a mini rucksack/haul bag for a while now so the basis of the bags would be this. Round bottomed, reinforced base seam with simple webbing ladders up the sides. The top would be a simple nylon drawstring closure. Large webbing handles bar-tacked into the top seam could easily take the abuse Andy wanted to throw at them. No sooner had we drawn the sketch on the factory white board than there we 10 bags sitting on the cutting table. The guys around the building we’re intrigued and could see many more uses than for them than just big wall climbing... but right now we can’t wait to see if they make it onto any of the edits for Sports Relief.
