The mat is supposed to do most of the work but it will never inflate itself fully. The foam will expand to its natural thickness drawing air in as it does. It is then down to you to top it up to the firmness you prefer.
We use a low density foam to reduce the weight and bulk of the Airics. We also die cut the foam to reduce weight and bulk still further, without reducing the thermal properties of the mat. The downside to this is it will take longer to self inflate and you will have to top it up a little more by blowing it up. The factory squashes them waffer thin for shipping and storage so when brand new the foam always takes longer to wake itself up. For stubborn mats we recommend leaving them over night, top them up in the morning and leave them with the valve closed. Subsequent inflation / deflation will become much easier and we always recommend that your store the mat flat with the valve open (if possible). Don’t worry there is no risk of exploding the mat!
