Rucksack attachment

The problem :
Having quick and easy access to bits of kit - your compass, GPS, compact camera, mobile phone, watch, etc. - you need immediate access to whilst walking. These things, if packed in pockets or your rucksack, can be particularly difficult to get to or see when its wet, your fingers are cold and encumbered by gloves, or your hands are full of food/guide books/ice axes.

The answer :
Have a number of outside pockets or pouches attached to your rucksack shoulder straps or waist belt/chest strap. There would be two or three pouches ‘in-line’ with each other on a single fabric strip (width about 70mm and certainly no more than 300mm long) of semi stiffened material. The pouches would be made of an material with a high degree of elasticity so that kit doesn’t accidentally fall out and get lost. The pockets could even have an transparent ‘window’ section enabling you to see say the display of your GPS, mobile, etc.  Another fixing could be one on which you could strap your watch to; so it’s usable all the time without your having to expose your wrist to the cold and rain. Well designed electronic items with decent sized buttons could even be operated without the need to remove them from the pouch.

On the reverse side of the semi stiffened material are plastic clips (like those used on bits of kit made by a well known equipment manufacturer used to attach mobile phone cases to belts) to attach the strip/pouches to the rucksack so its held in place.

As the strip of pouches is an attachment to your rucksack, it can be swapped between sacs or removed for security e.g. when travelling or you have to leave your sac outside the mountain hut or pub. It could even be attached to a belt or bum-bag for those days your travelling really light.

Profile Duncan Parsons

I have been walking and mountaineering in the UK, Europe and occasionally further afield for more years than I care to remember. Winter in Scotland is tops with the Alps in summer a close second.  Have seen equipment fashions come and go but some gear problems remain. Having an interest in design and product evaluation I welcome anything that makes time on the hill easier.
