Part-Inflatable Boulder Mat

A roll up boulder mat consisting of one third foam and two thirds inflatable part.
Benefits - smaller storage in boot of car for trips and can be carried by motorbikers to boulder venues. Also can get it through airport customs easier.

Whats to stop it popping or you simply bouncing off?

Posted on 11 October, 2007 by Paul Bennett

Good question - airbeds have thick material - I’ve bounced on them and never popped one. I don’t think it will be as thick as a bouncy castle to generate spring - but if it gets built we can find out!

This has been already made by Mountain Hardwear.

Are they actually retailing their mat? A few issues we found were that the recovery rate of the mat to full thickness was quite slow (compared to a regular open cell mat). The outer also has to be very durable to resist punctures or holes created through abrasion otherwise performance can reduce, this means the mat ends up being very heavy.

Do you have a link available to confirm this? Looked in their innovations section and there is no mention. Also, looked around their website but couldn’t find any boulder mats. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you talking about a self inflating mat? Mine was to be pumped up to pressure.

Thanks

HGB have developed and marketed(?) an inflatable boulder mat called the ‘Air Pad’. Not sure my idea is significantly different.

Ho hum.

Could amend the pad to be multi-celled to accommodate slope, lumps and bumps, etc.
Bungee tabs so it can be securely located too?
As the volume to be carried is reduced could it be thicker and bigger area than equivalent weight conventional pad.
CO2 inflation would be nice to increase climbing time and a pressure indicator.
Like it.
