This backpack concept is a modular, ergonomic, and performance strength bag perfect for both city trips and week-long hikes. The rigid thermofoam bags come in three varieties; the urban day pack, the weekender, and the 5-day trekker - that quickly snap into the universal frame. Made of lightweight gas-assist molded plastic, the frame features large air channels to maintain breathability and a flexible core for unrestricted mobility. Versatile, lightweight performance.

I was tired of buying a variety of packs to fit all of my needs. As most of the backpack cost is in the frame, I decided to make this a universal part. Use-specific bags could then be purchased at a much lower price and snapped into the frame as needed.
How well does the back system adapt to the hugely varying loads involved? There’s a big difference between a “summer walking” pack with just sandwiches and water - something that barely even needs a proper back system - and a “climbing plus camping” pack where you could be looking at carrying ropes, a large rack, a full set of camping kit, food etc up to 90-odd litres (plus stuff in compression straps) and over 20Kg - and then wanting to set up “base camp” somwhere, crunch the compression straps down and use the same pack for climbing with.
The frame would have to accommodate the largest load (i.e. climbing + camping.) In reality the smallest bag may be more of a large day-pack than a picnic bag. I have kicked around ideas about a modular frame—pieces are removed during lighter use, minimizing weight. Obviously I’d love to take the idea to the next step and test some of these ideas. Cheers.
