Bouldering mats are nice to land on but a pain to transport. If carried in one hand then they get tripped over, drag on the ground and generally make a nuisance of themselves – alternatively, putting the mat on your back means that you need to find another way to carry everything that would normally be in a rucksack on said back. Stuffing things down the mat *nearly* works, but only if you restrict yourself to one pair of shoes, the all-important spare beanie and some very, very squashed sandwiches. Rucksack-style straps on mats are not usually adjustable for back length, which is a pain for the very short and the very tall. All this becomes something of a problem when you want to lug the mat and a selection of other kit up to a crag with a two-hour uphill walk-in.
This project comprises a removable, comfortable, back-length-adjustable carrying harness for a bouldering mat which allows a rucksack to be carried as well. In addition, items such as ropes can be tucked under the top strap, bringing the weight closer to the user’s back and hence improving stability and comfort.

I used to break things to find out how they worked. Now that I’m a grown-up and have a bigger gaffer-tape budget, I make things to find out how they work. Sometimes, to my eternal surprise, they actually do.
