Bivvy-hood

I had this idea when i was laid down near Dulyn Bothy and put my head into a maxi bag to see what kind of shelter it would provide. Surprisingly, loads. I’d have felt quite happy sleeping in there with my bivvy bag, in the rain.

So essentially, the idea is a ‘hood’ that you attach to a bivvy bag, possibly peg it down with a couple of pegs.

In foul weather, you can drawcord it down, so you’re snug in there, but not too confined. Your rucksack would keep the fabric from layign on your face.

If it’s nicer, then a couple of attachemnts would allow you to raise the hood up by attaching to walking poles. Ideal if it’s nice weather, and you want to watch the stars, but dont want to wake up in the middle of the night when the rain starts falling!

Such an item shouldn’t weigh more than a couple of hundred grams - at MOST. The ‘rough’ shape would be square base, 1/4 circles on the side and a panel curving around back to front - a bit like the shape you used to get the canopies on babies’ prams. Obviously, it would need a few prototypes to get the shape right - but a more rounded ‘maxi - bag’ would make a good start.

If you’re not convinced, then try it with a 2 man kisu or mountain shelter. They’d do the job, but are too heavy at 400g. There’s no reason why the above idea shouldn’t double as a one man kisu too.

Been walking years and want to do some more bivvying, but the British weather tends to be against me!
