I got a 600 for cold weather walking on Dartmoor, and the only trouble with the thing is, it’s too hot! Light, really well constructed, collapses down into an impossibly small parcel, but still, so ruddy hot for Dartmoor in winter. Used it in late November this year, and every night I had to unzip to cool down. If that is the level of complaint about the bag - I guess it isn’t too bad!
Bought a PD400, for summer alpine. As far as I could tell it’s cheaper and warmer for the weight than any of the competition (Rab, ME, Marmot etc.) The only bag that’s warmer for the weight is a PHD Minim 400, but these cost £215 and don’t have a full length zip.
The bag was brilliant - warm enough to keep comfortable sleeping on the Vale Blanche, but not so hot that you get roasted on the Plan de L’Aiguille, light and small.
I Bought my PD 800 at the Birmingham Ordnance Survey Outdoor Show in Spring 09 and not looked back. Great piece of kit that in the hotter weather can just be used a a duvet rather than a full blown Bag.
Watch out for the occasional bit of Down trying to escape, but most Down Bags do that.
Looking at getting the Fillet or Filo now, hoping they are the same good quality.
Cheers Guys, Great Job!
Looking at buying new down bag and PD600 looks good. However, am 6’2” and max height specified is 6’1”. Is this 1” going to make a difference or will bag be a bit on the small size?
I’ve just returned from a 2 week cycling trip from Lands End to John O’ Groats with the bulk of my sleeping arrangement relying on alpkit products, the central part being a pipedream 400.
Well what can I say, the bag was more than warm and most nights was little more than a blanket to keep away the cold. However when the temperature did drop it provided ample warmth and functioned brilliantly alongside my hunka bivvy bag.
This was my first ‘proper’ sleeping bag and first venture into the world of goose down, but I’m now a complete convert.
hi, just read the review in the country walking mag. think i probably want the pd600 but im female 5ft4” and rather well padded if you know what i mean, i still sleep on the cold side though. would i be better with a short bag or stick with the standard bag that has a little more width to it? thanks jo
I bought the PD400 a couple of weeks ago - it arrived as promised on time and as advertised. Despite being suitable only for people under 6’1 I have found it to be very comfortable (I’m 6’3 and 85kg) and almost made to measure. The non-jam zip baffle is very effective, as is the neck baffle; both with a good level of fill and adjustment. The filling in the body of the bag spreads with a little encouragement and I only had issues with a cold spot once on one night (the top filling can creep to the sides), and the fill in the foot box kept me toasty which is usually where I get cold first. I did get a lot of static from the bag, but the materials are very lightweight and this makes up for it imo. I last used the bag with a closed cell mat and a cotton liner, wearing some clothes and in a bothy in Scotland with outside temp -17 approx. and was comfortable throughout the night; so would suggest that the -3 rating is rather conservative but may be fair for a novice to lightweight adventures.
