I have just returned from a six week trip to East Africa with my new pipedream 400; it was the perfect sleeping bag; small and light enough to carry when temperatures were 40C + yet warm enough when sleeping on the shoulder of Mount Kenya in sub zero temperatures.
The only trouble is, after 6 weeks straight use, it stinks! :D
Now had a chance to use my PD800 a couple of times in anger. only -7ish the coldest night. Never felt anything at all, a nice sleep. It got quite a bit warmer and had to open it right open and use as a blanket..
Loving the lightness and small pack size.
Small correction on my 4th May posting. My PD is a 400 not 600 - making its performance even more commendable!
A couple of weeks ago I used my Pipedream 400 for the first time on an exped where the night temperatures dropped to around 3degC. I was warm as toast and most impressed with comfort while one of my companions was cold in a Cumulus rated at -10 degC! I would therefore fully concur your temperature ratings for this bag and congratulate you on your prices - well done guys.
Purchased a Pipedream 600 after along wait for delivery and it was well worth it - my first down bag. Used in the Cairngorms over two cold, i.e. sub zero Spring nights, last week, one night in a bothy and one in a tent, over an Alpkit 3/4 length sleepmat. A winning combination, with the bag being absolutely comfortable, warm and well up to the task, with just a base layer worn next to my skin. The mat too was comfortable, relatively non-slip and more than up to the task of keeping the cold ground at bay. All together I’m really pleased with these items and the service by Alpkit is exemplary. If you are patient, the bags are worth the wait!
Hi,
I first visited the alpkit site just to buy the highly recommended PD800, about a year ago. Of course, at that time, it wasn’t available (like any other PD). Since then I have been visiting alpkit.com like an addict just to check PD availability. After all this time, I’ve bought any other useless gadget (including the SH600) except the one I really needed in the first place. I’ve freezed in -10C several times, just refusing to buy anything else than the PD! Well my patience is over, the PD is an excellent product, with super specs & price, only that it doesn’t really exist. What is the meaning of great marketing for a non existing product?
I’ve just replaced my trusty 25+ year old Lhotse down sleeping bag with a pipe dream 800, and I am very impressed. it’s half the weight and twice as warm. But however hard I tried I could not get it to go into the small stuff sack, my husband tried too and we ended up ripping the stuff sack slightly, but to no avail! Have only tried it out in the garden so far, but I’m looking forward to getting out on the hills with it.
Last Feb after almost 20 years my Snugpak softie 9 synthetic bag had lost most of its insulation properties and with a lakes backpacking trip coming up time for a new s/bag then. I contacted Alpkit they only had the 400 left so I bought one in conjunction with a filo so I could double up if need be. The s/bag is half the weight and packed size of my old snugpack and in last years and this years Feb trips to the lakes camping high up in snow (Angle Tarn, above Stickle Tarn etc) the bag performed faultlessly for me in conjunction with silk liner and on one night the filo (Angle Tarn last Sunday whiteout and blizzard plus 10 mins to chip ice off tent before packing up. Service from alpkit was informed, helpfull and prompt in all excellent and very keenly priced. I will soon be buying a full length mat from alpkit as my present 3/4 thermarest with walking trousers and fleece under my lower legs is not ideal in snow. I look forward to using kit a lot more in the future.
Tested my PD800 out last night in -8 on the Mendips under a midge net and tarp (and Helly Hansen Dry Base Layer). Getting into the bag was nothing short of delightful. A warming feeling from the start and continued right through the night. Woke this morning with tarp covered in frost but didn’t want to get out of my toasty bag. Absolutely brilliant. Don’t know how I’ve managed without one up until now…...and I’ve even got some spare change as it cost a heck of a lot less that comparable manufacturers.
Bought my PD 400 for backpacking trip to Western Isles last year where its extra warmth for same weight of my old Vango Venom 300 was much appreciated. Originally I got an ME Xero 250, but thanks to ME’s odd sizing std was too small (i’m 5 11) this meant I need the large, pushing weight into PD 400 area - hence no brainer for price difference.
I now have a Rab Neutrino 200 I got off ebay (£100) for light weight use as my main critism of PD400 is its too much for alot of Summer useage in UK (inc highlands) - come on guys lets see the PD 300 and PD 200! These bags are great value for money, but IMHO they are not of same quality as offerings from ME/Rab etc, but you will pay alot more with them for small gains in performance. Stuff sack needs to be sorted out too - this is not hard. Stop supplying the compression sack and make the light weight one more useable, its far too small so why no supply one of you own air lock bags. I use a Sea to Summit small non water proof bag that’s just about big enough and very light.
