The AD900 has been fab - bought for camper-vanning in the Alps over winter and I’ve been toasty warm every night so far. Bring on minus 20!
rather a delayed review....exactly this time last year I was at base camp for Ama Dablam in Nepal having summited on 7/11/06. Took my AD900 to camp 3 (6230m) and couldn’t fault it (well, ok, the logo badge came off). The reason I am back here now is to buy one for my girlfriend who demands coziness - what to do you are out of stock!! she’ll have to make do with a PD (...scheme - maybe I will swap). Very happy, good kit, keeps delivering, never a cold night in it yet. Cheers
Ordered my AD900 bag (and airic) at 12.24 on 6th November and received both items at 15.00 on 7th November. Super quick service.
I have only tried out my bag briefly but it feels absolutey luxurious. The bag has been bought with a trip to Aconcagua in mind; feedback on performance will follow in Feb 08.
I do need a down jacket so wil definitely get a Fantom if they are ready in time.
I tried out my new Alpine Dream 900 last night. Only in the garden, not very exciting and it remained overcast so didn’t get down to freezing, but its just lovely! Its so thick my legs were supported on the feathers so they stayed really warm even with only a 3/4 thermalite ultra and the Hunka bivy. I’m, sure I actually absorb heat rather then produce it at night I have never found a bag I feel warm in but this was a dream. Also it was nice to have the bag actually fit me, at 5ft 2 I’ve never experienced that before.
All in all this bag far exceeds what I was expecting and at a fantastic price too.
Took AD700 up Kilimanjaro last week, kept me lovely and warm every night, lofts up well, the hood fits well and helps keep you warm. No problems or malfunctions with bag or stuff sack, short length was perfect fit - no need to shell out a fortune for a ‘womens’ fit. I’m really pleased with the bag and would recommend it ☺
Self and teenaged first-timer took our new AD 500s with us around the Outer Hebrides in August. Kid slept like a log every night of the 2 week trip. I had one cold night, but can’t really blame the bag for it; the wind-chill was extreme and our pitch overly exposed that night - the only time we paid to camp all the way round, ironically - and our inner tent is largely mesh. Debating whether to upgrade tent, upgrade sleeping bags or take bivis too on our next big trip (to Norway).
Got myself the AD700. Firstly, top notch delivery - arrived the next day before 1pm, which was just as well as I was off a few hours later to test it out! Got a wee bit nippy that night, nothing subzero, but it kept me lovely and cosy. I was worried that I would overheat in it in these summer months, but felt quite comfortable. Then took it to Cheddar for a climbing weekend (what an awesome place!) and threw it over me as a duvet. I had a liner with it (Vapour Tech from Trek Mates) and am pleased with it as it provides more versatility for those hot nights (liner on its own) or very cold nights. It also made things more comfortable - sweaty skin against the AD700 nylon gets very sticky!
Haven’t found a problem with the stuff sack - kneeling on the sack to compress it then pulling the chords in puts no real pressure on the buckles, which is just as well because the bag lofts so well (seriously it was like a big feathery balloon!) that it takes some effort to get it back in!
I was also worried about the type of nylon - i tried researching it but found little about it (I think it’s the same stuff used in the Filet?). it seems perfectly downproof, though a couple of feathers found their way out through the seams, but that’s nothing really. My friend also kindly splashed water over it and the water beaded nicely without soaking in.
A few other points - it seems that these bags beat most on fill power. Also, the Tactel nylon isn’t super lightweight, but then is slightly more durable to wear and tear.
Overall, I am a very happy monkey and at that cost can’t help but chuckle at those who have spent a fortune on other brand name bags.
Thanks very much to the Alpkit lads (and yes i slept very well, thank you
)
Wow - what a great bag, just got the A900 in the post and it looks fantastic. The size is great, it “inflates” like an hovercraft when unpacked, but packs down really small with the stuff sack - the only down side is it is August and I am going to have to wait a while before I can really test it!
I’ve had my AD700 for nearly a year now and have used it in sub-freezing Scottish winter and recently bivvying at 2700m in the Alps as well as some milder valley nights. It’s been fantastic on all occasions, keeping me toasty warm all night. I put my down jacket on in the Alps as it was really cold, but had to take it off to stop myself sweating! The little security pocket is great for drying small thinks such as liner socks and gloves when bivvying during the night. Admittedly, it’s not the lightest bag in the world but who can complain when the equivalent brands charge over £250 for equivalent spec?!
Delivery was top notch as ever with Alpkit, but I do repeat previous comments about the compression sack. My first buckle broke under compression and the sack was repaired without a problem, but this has since happened again, and I now use my old Ajungilak stuffsack which is 7 years old and generally much more durable.
However, the bag itself and delivery are more than worth this slight defect - 100% recommended!
just got back from basecamp 4 days ago and all i want to do is get into my alpine dream 900!!!!!
this bag is fantastic i was the only one in the party that was warm and toasty every night. there are many people at base camp that have been told about your bags and i would like to say thank you alpkit for your support xxxxx
