The Good, the Bad and the Future

28/06/07

Are you active in the outdoors? Do you like getting your hands on limited edition kit and helping to develop it? Do you have a neck that cranes backwards when you overhear gear related discussions in public? You sound like a coLAB person.

coLAB has been bubbling away in the background for the past couple of years. The basic premise has been that our combined customer base has an essential part to play in the devleopment of our products. This year we took it a step forward and introduced two specific coLAB products in relatively low volumes, just enough to get a good idea how they perform and how we can make them better next time around.

The Filium down smock and Bleat baselayer were already at an advanced stage in their development, and we have been chuffed to see our hard work receive many favourable comments. Equally you have not held back in telling us where we haven’t got everything right, especially with regards to fit, Gavin posted on his Bleat,

“These are good but small. Could also do with being a bit longer. Also it would be nice to be able to roll the sleeves up, but they are too tight. Great value though.
Would I buy another? Probably.
Would I but another if they were a little larger and longer? Definitely.”

This experience has convinced us of the value of direct feedback and the coLAB concept. However we want to make the process even better, and we can do this by making limited samples available much earlier in their development cycle. This just hints at the direction coLAB is taking and we will post more details over the summer along with an interesting competition opportunity for all gear heads.

Hi Nick
Any chance you will be developing a windproof jacket anytime soon?

What a great idea. Nothing better than listening to your customers. Not only is it great market research but as a tool for developing products what could be better.
having bought tons of gear over the years for running, biking as well as walking and camping I’m certain that I could offer a objective and constructive point of view.

Nick, I think what you will get is a good set of feedback on your products from wide cross section of people using them for different pusuits: a good example would be your baselayer, some people would use it for cimbing, some for general hill walking etc, and at different times of year. And Im sure you would have both mae and female testers, to broaden the feedback further. I fir one would be happy to promote you kit on forums, on my blog, and on sites like myspace to spread the owrd about Alpkit gear, assuming I like it of course!! If I am not keen on a prduct I tested, you would get feedback as to why and how I think it could be improved. Thus you get genuione feedback from users of pre preoduction products to refine them before the production stage, and testers spreading the word at how good a peice of kit is before it hits the shop. In my opininon, the best salesman is nit in a shop, but word of mouth from someone who has used a peice of kit and recommended it.

Thought it worth a comment before everyone gets carried away.

This will be a “I scratch your back you scratch mine” idea.

What could you offer us in return for free use of gear. This isnt a gear give away, but a chance for someone to be involved with the development of a product, how could you best do that?

Sounds like a great idea, Waiting for my bleat to arrive (having just ordered it at midnight!) but would love to try the new bivi-bag.

Went on a Gore testing weekend a while back when they released softshell and paclite 3. Was an excellent way of testing new stuff and they get to hear peoples feedback instantly and any tips on refining prototypes!

Planing another Uni Climbing Club ice climbing trip this year, I’m sure 6 skint students would be more than happy to thrash new gear up icefalls for a couple of weeks!

Keep up the excellent work

Ben

Will happily test kit, no worries.

Have been pointed in the direction of your site via Trail magazine forums, and have to say I am impressed. Quality gear at low prices is usually an oxymoron, but not here!!

Will be buying a base layer and head torch in very short order!!
