Thanks for those comments Tim. The boulder mat is now available named Phud it sells at ?60.00. As you will see it is pretty low spec r.e. the shell with a simple over the shoulder strap, but the foam is the mutts nuts. We are working on a more bells & whistles model as we speak. The bag with rucksack straps is also another product we have been working on and should be available later this year. Hopefully early summer. Keep your eyes peeled.
I think a climbing wall manufacturer sell a mat without rucksack straps but sell a mat shaped bag with straps on.
Could you offer to sew on shoulder straps to order for a little bit more money. Or sell a bag with straps on to carry the mat in,which could stop you getting muddy cloathes as well as allowing you to carry it on your back?
some of the pictures are at nottingham climbing center
I’m afraid I think we are going to have to dissapoint you Justin with this model. Because we really wanted to source this product in the UK the price for the construction has become a real battle. To achieve anywhere near our target price of £50£60 we are going to have to go simple on the construction. This means we are likely only to offer this model with anything other than a simple shoulder strap. The foam prices are in and we will be offering this mat in a dual density format with 75mm(3in) of opencell and 25mm(1in) of crossed linked closed cell.
Perhaps I carry too much stuff when I go out but I hate carrying a mat AND a rucksack. Yes I can slide stuff in the pad but then the damn thermos always slides out. Dunno how heavy your mat will be but a shoulder/rucksac strap that doesnt cut your neck off would be good, perhaps even a waist strap for longer approaches?
We brought several layers all 10mm thick and them layered to different thinknesses. This certainley didn’t work no matter how dense the foam was. I am now in the process of glueing these 10mm sheets together to see what happens. We have also tried an open cell foam with a thin (5mm) very dense foam glued onto the top and this worked surprising well. Price looks like this mat will consist of two layers, open / closed high quality foam. This will be our first mat and we will be launching a more luxurious all singing and dancin’ mat later this year. Let me know if you could have any feature on a mat what would it be.
can you do thin closed cell one side, thick closed cell the other and open cell in the middle, or is this too expensive? if you had the combination of 3/4” one side and 2 layers of 3/4” the other, you say layers like this dont work though, did you try this combination? if it doesnt work and buying 3 different foams isnt cost effective then go for std format of closed and open that others use with better quality foam
