Really just posting an update having had them for a while now -

The performance continues to impress me, even after several washes (the missus keeps nicking them, otherwise they’d never make it as far as the washing machine) the material proofing seems to be as resilient as ever to moisture, be it rain, snow or a careless pint spillage.  Multiple washes don’t seem to have affected the fit either (not prone to excessive shrinkage).  Dirt still seems to be shrugged off reasonably easily, though they are by no means impervious to a good coating of mother earth when one goes base over apex coming downhill (but there again what is?).

I have grown used to the fit and would now feel a little aggrieved if it was changed too much, I’m constantly being asked about them down the bouldering wall and they’re a firm favourite on days out on the wall or crags.  Definitely a keeper, the sooner these arrive back in store again the better – though I think AlpKit will need to stock up a bit to cope with the demand!

PS-you must make some more so far i have at least three mates that all want a pair.

Seems I’m a little late to the party, and to be honest, I’m not sure I can face wading through 18 pages of reviews, comments and questions to make sure that I’m not covering the same ground. And let’s be honest, after 18 pages, I’m not likely to have anything much new to say - it is, at the end of the day, a pair of jeans.

But damn! They’re good.

I like the styling - the cut’s comfortable and evidently looks good (first ever spontaneous compliment on clothing from my girlfriend). I even really like the “Driving to the Mountains” thingy on the back pocket. Perhaps they’re a little longer in the leg than other jeans advertising the same measurements, but that’s not the end of the world. As for the waterproof thing… much better than expected! Went out for a nice long wander in near biblical weather not long after I got them, and after about 20 minutes it occurred to me that I was still dry, rather than being soaked to the skin starting form the bottom of my waterproof jacket. They’ve had a few washes now (possibly not as many as they should have) and the waterproofing’s just as good as when they came out the wrapper.

Hat’s of to you folks Alpkit. I’ve a few mates that have tried to get them but you were out of stock. Seems to be the only regular complaint about the company: you don’t get enough gear in! Go on: bite the bullet and fill the shelves (or get bigger ones), we’ll not let you down.

Right: I’m off to browse for last minute Christmas presents….

Cheers,

Dougie

I haven’t gone through the morass of other replies, so don’t know if I’m repeating some of the existing feedback.

I’m female but ordered these because being largely hip-free, men’s troos tend to fit me better than women’s. These were very baggy in the hips, a bit of an embarrassing silhouette, really. They look a bit funny on my boyfriend, too, but he didn’t seem to mind…

The logo on the pocket “driving to the mountains” was quickly picked off, because while I do have to drive to the mountains, it isn’t something I’m proud of on an environmental ethics basis.

The waterproofness is good fun, and have found to be very effective when walking through town in howling autumnal and winter rainstorms. I wouldn’t wear them on the hill: just walking, they would be far too hot; walking into a climb - too hot and the fact that the fabric doesn’t slide over knees as well as even normal denim for the climbing itself.

The abovementioned bagginess is good for bouldering, helped by the articulation and diamond gusset, but I am unlikely to be bouldering in weather that utilises the waterproofness, so trousers that slide better over the skin are more likely to be used.

Biggest whinge - if you leave them in the car for after-climb or after-walk changing-into, they are incredibly cold to put on, much colder than normal jeans. Also, if bouldering in cold weather, every time they get away from the skin and then make contact again, it is very chilly. You could argue that it keeps the sweat down, reduces chalk consumption. Not sure.

My verdict - making jeans out of this fabric/textile concept is a fun idea, but not terribly practical for the money. There are a lot of water-resistant troos out there that breathe better if you are hoping to do any sort of heat-generating activity in them. I’m not a fan of the current cut (I know you said that could change) so I’m not even too likely to wear them around town.

should I attach a smiley to indicate that I’m not actually a total grump?
cheers

Another Winner!!

Have had the slacks about 4 weeks and they are superb. I took a risk and ordered a waist size too small, as I had to have a pair, and blow me they fitted a treat so assume they are some form of slimming aid.

The waterproofing is superb, the fit is extremely comfortable especially in the crotch where quite often normal jeans are way too tight.

I like the styling and wear them constantly.

The only comment I have is will there be a zip fly version on the cards?

Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see the next new test product.

Having grown accustomed to the slightly looser fit than I’m used to I wear these most days, everyone who’s seen them has commented on how good the styling is and the water shedding properties has everyone confused and suprised.

If I could get another pair tomorrow I would, they’re superb I’m just glad I got them when I did and can’t wait for new stock becoming available.

Been using them for a while and generally impressed.  Like many other people I find the leg length a bit too long and end up with them turned up most of the time (this does have the side effect that I end up accumulating rain and dirt in the turn ups).  As to the water proofing its great but limited; cycling to and from work in pouring rain quickly leads to water saturating the fabric.  That said they dry really quickly which makes them ideal for working in a wet lab.

For going canoeing they are ideal as loading boats onto roofs and inspecting rivers seems to inevitably lead to trousers getting wet and muddy.  Its a pleasure to be able to drive home in dry trousers for a change.  If more become available then I would probably get another pair that are a better fit.

Please make these jeans as a standard item, I love mine.
Been wearing them now for a few months, bit of bouldering, riding and generally wandering around and work (although the last 2 are interchangable).
So go on alpkit make some more

Hmmm! Love em!

Bought them on a whim just before I went on holiday and they were waiting for me when I got back. Fit a bit snug at first, but haven’t shrunk like my other jeans always seem to.

The cut is good, I have quite big thighs from biking and usually stuggle to get pants that fit here while not being gaping around the waist (32/32). I think the sizing is pretty accurate, which is reassuring when buying blind.

They’ve got a little bit of stretch, which is just enough for me on the wall, as I usually wear these for uni then go straight to the wall in the evening. They get chalked up a bit but it dusts off easily meaning I can be skanky and pull them out of the wash-box if I want to. I’ve not noticed any staining or marking from mud or water at all. They usually only get washed when I realise how long it’s been since the last time.

I like the button fly, I noticed a few posts asking for a zip - buttons are safer. I like buttons.

The little copper “AK” rivets are a nice touch, but the pocket logo stiching is a bit like marmite (love/hate), but at least it’s discreet.

Don’t like them in the cold though, the fabric surface is very cold-to-touch, giving a bit of a chill in the mornings or if the temp drops a bit (like the last few months). Maybe I’m just being nesh…

Would I recommend them to anyone? I usually do, they’re ace and they’re my favourite pair of pants.

Cheers,

Jonathan

I bought my jeanius a few months ago now. I’m pretty impressed, I poured water on myself on many occasions to show the non-believers!

After a few months of climbing and cycling the fabric un the thighs has become a bit worn and collects water easily which eventually leaks through in heavy rain.

Otherwise totally amazing! and they look cool too! It’s the first pair of jeans i’ve worn in over fifteen years!

Would I recommend them to anyone.

Very good, will hopfully be getting another few pairs if they come available.

great i’n damp weather for walking.

Have worn them on the bike, walking, the pub, taking the dog out to colect the sheep and they are so much better than normal jeans.

Can be a little cold but i have worn thermals under them and even poped out on my skis for a few runs over xmas when on holls.

Please make more of these!!

Hi Alp-folks

Got a pair of jeans early on, super baggy cut. Then got a belt - problem sorted. Some more smaller sizes the next time around may go down well (and would make my other half mega happy).

Cheers

Tim

PS. Every climber I show the magic water running off thing too immediately declares they want a pair. Think you might be on to a winner smile

Having used my Jeanius’ since mid December, I have been bouldering in them, been in the snow with them, and walked in them. They bead water really well, and are easy to move around in, but for me there are a few niggles.

The water repellent-ness is very good, you don’t get water soaking up the leg if you step in puddles and you legs stay dry when it rains. They are also easy to dust chalk off after climbing. However my previous pair of jeans I used for bouldering I find better for climbing in. they are a pair from the next sale about 2 or 3 years ago. Instead of a diamond crotch (which seems to make the top of the trousers buldge out with big air gaps between me and the jeans, think Wallace and Gromits wrong trousers tongue laugh ) the pannel carrys on down the whole leg. this means that they are loose enough to not need an articulated knee meaning that people wouldn’t have the problem of the joint being to low or high in the leg. I do like the stitching on the back pocket and the ak rivets and the general decoration but I only wear them for bouldering as the cut reminds me of jeans my grandad wears. They are also quite cold but I realise by making them water resistant you lose some of the thermal properties (so wearing thermals underneath is a good idea on cold days).

So basically I’m saying that they tick most of the boxes except the going down to the pub bit (because of the strange buldginess)

If photos of the cut of my old bouldering jeans are any use, I can take some photos for you.

Regards

Ben

Hi guys,

Clue is in the title really - they’re a cracking idea. My usage so far has largely been round the town as I’m not a rock climber, and wouldn’t choose them for long treks or winter mountaineering.

However, as someone unashamed when it comes to wearing practical stuff round town, it came as a real bonus that these fitted well, and indeed are styled perfectly. My girlfriend (long suffering in having an other half who is ‘styled to the max’ in softshell jacket or bomber Mountain Equipment shell) was shocked that these were even vaguely technical. She loves them irrespective of techincal performance. First test passed.

As for using them in inclement weather, they’ve been reassuringly comfortable and dry. Only niggle is that the wide legs(and I hasten to add that I’m glad you’ve not gone down the opposite route of having skinny fitted type jean legs) are wide enough to flap around and get a bit damp. I wouldn’t mind having them slightly less wide, but NOT narrow legged like Asda value jeans.
Otherwise - ‘jeanius’! Several of my non-outdoor kit geek friends are keen on them and think the £55 prioce tag is very fair.
