You can make pretty much any fabric waterproof but you’ll effect another aspect of its performance to achieve this. The process used by Epic leaves the fabric as close to its original feel as anything we have seen. Unlike many other processes which glue a secondary layer to the face fabric Epic encapsulates the fibers of the fabric with a silicon coating. The amount of silicon used is carefully controlled to leave tiny “micro holes” between the encapsulated fibers allowing water vapour to escape, without allowing outside water and wind to penetrate. Our Jeanius Jeans use denim encapsulated in Epic making them highly water resistant and windproof.

An ultra-thin treatment of durable water repellent polymer applied to fabric after manufacturer. The coating penetrates the fibers and lowers the surface tension of the fabric, causing water to bead up and roll off the garment instead of being absorbed. DWR is not a waterproofing treatment by itself and is gradually removed through use and washing. DWR treatments can be applied using products such as Nikwax® and Grangers®.

For some information about testing DWR coatings check out this page.

It is a constant battle to first generate heat and then keep hold of it, heat likes nothing more than to escape. Need proof? try sitting butt naked on a cold rock and feel the rush of heat from you in to the rock below. Now, do that for to long and you are going to turn blue pretty quickly, what you need is a layer of material that will not allow the heat to escape.. a layer of insulation. The mythical R-value indicates an objects resistance to the transfer of heat, the better the resistance the higher the R-value.

A self-inflating mat is a layer of compressable foam sandwiched inside an airtight envelope with a sealable valve. When you open the valve the foam expands and sucks air into the mat. After a couple of minutes the mat will be semi-firm and you will have to add a few breaths of air to make the mat firm enough to sleep on. Popular manufacturers include Thermarest, Alpkit and Gelert.
