What ever we write here it will contradict somebody’s understanding of softshell but here is ours. A soft shell product is not taped and is windproof. It may inherit some waterproof characteristics but it will not keep you dry in sustained precipitation. A softshell system does have some inherent insulational characteristics and can be made up of more than one layer of fabric.
